Aftercare Following Dental Implant Placement

Proper care after the placement of dental implants is crucial for successful healing and optimal outcomes. Here are some important guidelines to follow:

Bleeding

Some bleeding or redness in the saliva is normal for the first 24 hours. Control excessive bleeding by biting on a gauze pad placed directly on the bleeding wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, contact us at 805 925 1440 for further instructions.

Swelling

Swelling is expected after surgery. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel or a plastic bag filled with ice to the cheek in the surgery area. Continue to apply ice for the first 36 hours as much as possible.

Diet

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Also, avoid consuming very hot liquids or food. More importantly, stick to soft foods and liquids on the day of surgery and gradually transition to a normal diet unless otherwise directed. Additionally, avoid chewing hard foods on the implant sites for at least the first month to promote proper healing.

Antibiotics

Take prescribed antibiotics as directed to help prevent infection.

Oral Hygiene

Maintain good oral hygiene for optimal healing. Use the prescribed Peridex Oral Rinse before bed on the night of surgery, and twice daily — after breakfast and before bed thereafter — until your postoperative appointment. Additionally, use warm saltwater rinses (teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) at least 5 times a day, especially after meals. Brush the area gently with a very soft toothbrush after the first 24 hours. Do not forget to brush your teeth but be gentle around the surgical areas.

Activity

Limit physical activities immediately after surgery to prevent throbbing or bleeding. Discontinue exercising if these symptoms occur, as reduced nourishment may weaken you further.

Wearing Your Prosthesis

Avoid using partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures immediately after surgery and at least the next 10 days unless instructed otherwise.

NOTE: Contact our office if you experience any unusual symptoms or excessive bleeding.

By following these instructions diligently, you can promote smooth healing and ensure the success of your dental implant procedure. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to contact our office for assistance.
