Following tooth extraction, proper care is crucial to promote healing and minimize discomfort. Here are things you need to do to ensure a smooth recovery process:
Bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes immediately after the procedure to facilitate blood clot formation and stop bleeding. If bleeding persists, apply another gauze pad and bite firmly for an additional 30 minutes. Repeat as needed.
Once the blood clot forms, avoid activities that may disturb or dislodge it, such as vigorous rinsing, using straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing teeth near the extraction site for 72 hours. Limit strenuous exercise for 24 hours to prevent increased bleeding.
Expect some pain and swelling after extraction. Thus, apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas/corn to the area to minimize swelling. Also, take prescribed pain medications as directed. Don’t worry, the swelling typically subsides within three days.
Follow medication instructions closely. If antibiotics are prescribed, complete the full course even if symptoms improve. Also, stay hydrated and consume nutritious soft foods on the day of extraction. You can resume normal eating once comfortable.
Resume your regular dental routine after 24 hours, including gentle brushing and flossing at least once daily. This promotes healing and maintains oral hygiene.
Watch for signs of heavy bleeding, severe pain, prolonged swelling that lasts for two to three days, or adverse reactions to medication. If any of these occur, contact our office immediately at 805 925 1440 for assistance.
By following these instructions carefully, you can ensure a swift and comfortable recovery from your tooth extraction procedure. If you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to reach out to our team for guidance and support.
